At the heart of the refugee crisis, in 2015 and 2016, hundreds of people were arriving in Germany every day. Football stadiums, old airports, and many eclectic empty venues were turned into emergency accommodation. A refugee child’s journey to Germany is very traumatic. With no home, memories of war, and an incredibly unstable daily life, children were in dire need of fun, laughter, and a spark of childhood.
Wind-Up Penguin shared many music and drama activities to over 3000 children in refugee shelters and other charities around Berlin and Cologne, over two projects in 2015 and 2016. Puppets, singing, mime, and storytelling were used as tools for powerful social change.
