Lebanon (2017 and 2019)
Over one million refugees are currently residing in Lebanon’s refugee camps after fleeing from the devastating civil war in neighbouring Syria. As of 2019, one in six people who live in Lebanon is a Syrian refugee. Among those that have fled are many children, who are confronted daily with the angst, trauma and instability of having no place to call home and no guarantee of a safe future. These children carry the worries and anxieties of their parents, taking on overwhelming and adult concerns that no should have to bear. No child should go through such distress at such a young age.
Our Wind-Up Penguin teams brought new music-theatre shows and workshops to refugee children in Lebanon during the summers of 2017 and 2019. We collaborated closely with many NGOs who work in basic need aid, adding a human and creative level of aid, which helps to restore refugees’ human dignity.
